Don't alter your filter pads, that is where the vast bulk of the benign bacteria are, just rinse very well in aquarium water you accept out, then supercede the water y'all took off with fresh, conditioned h2o. Filter pads volition almost concluding for ever if cleaned regularly and non physically damaged

How do u clean them
Take a piddling h2o out of your aquarium, swish your filter in the water, throw that h2o abroad and elevation off your tank with new make clean, conditioned water. If your filter is really dirty you lot can very apace rinse it nether running h2o from the kitchen sink, just do information technology quickly, yous may loose some good bacteria, but if washed quickly not plenty to hurt your tank.

Simply about everyone has kinda established their own cleaning routine and schedule. I routinely "make clean my filter pads" every 2 months. The cleaning consists of quickly but briskly rinsing the pads in aquarium water. If they are really funky I take used running tap water to rinse them of the larger funk then utilise aquarium h2o,as,a,quick final rinse.
Do not discard the filter pads they are colonized with benificial leaner.

I do, because if you lot leave the filter running with out a filter pad in place any junk that might be in the bottom of the filter tin can exist diddled / pumped back into the tank. I also use a small aquarium vacuum to actually clean information technology, you tin can besides use,a turkey baster to suction it make clean

From the photo actually looks, like the filter pad itself is actually falling apart, and needs,to be replaced, how old is the filter pad?

I would make clean this one as discussed, and place it in back of a replacement pad to permit the quondam i to help colonize the new pad.
You may want to evaluate how much you feeding, equally it really looks like a lot of droppings is beingness collected.

Only let information technology be, information technology will somewhen settle to the tank bottom and some will exist picked up by the filter once more. I know,it unsightly but will not injure your tank, it was already there correct, merely not floating effectually.
Recall to salvage as much as your old pad as possible to colonize the new ane.

Actually now, would be a skillful time to kinda, establish your own cleaning bicycle to include vacuuming the tank bottom, what kind of substrate exercise y'all have, and when was your last h2o change and how much.
May I enquire what kind and how many fish are, yyou keeping?

Despite this existence an old thread, for clarity's sake,
I must correct some misinformation on this thread: media should never be rinsed under the running h2o from a kitchen sink. All you lot need to do is swish it gently in quondam tank h2o to dislodge all solids so place information technology back in the filter. This can be washed whenever the flow of water has been
slowed down. It is
Meant to be brown coclored and the discoloration is no reason to run out and get a new filter pad.
When the media starts disintegrating, then run the old and new together for at least a month earlier removing the old to give the leaner the time to move to the new media
